Book Review   New publication on skin protection   Wolfgang Pittermann

Wolfgang Pittermann, formerly the senior scientist at Henkel’s research platform “Biochemistry of the skin”, discusses a German publication on occupational skin protection which has recently been published *. The book is concerned with the protection, cleansing and care of the skin and has been released in its fifth edition after being originally published nine years ago. It gives detailed descriptions of the biological, legal and technological aspects, specifies the application of skin care products, and also contains a product overview and supplying sources.

This new edition, which has been revised and updated to a great extent, received great critical acclaim. In the preface of the book, Dirk Mehlan, the Federal German Association for Skin Protection (Bundesverband Handschutz e.V., in short BVH), expressed his admiration for this work which he regards as a major contribution in the field of skin and hand protection in the occupational safety.

In the first chapter, the structure and functions of the skin are described in detail. As the stratum corneum is of major importance in occupational dermatology, the barrier function of the horny cell layer and the fact that the “mode of action of skin protection ointments occurs in this skin section” are pointed out. This mode of action would not exist without an efficient reservoir function of the horny layer.

Further chapters of the book treat topics such as the “current skin condition” (i.e. knowledge about the state of the skin at a specific point of time), occupational skin diseases, eczema, professional acne, etc.

The book contains 440 pages providing a variety of applications and a practice-oriented listing of relevant products on skin protection in the workplace, skin cleansing and skin protection. Innovatively, over 200 pages of the selection and product arrangement are categorized according to the various industrial sectors and occupations. Skin protection plans have been provided by a large number of producers. Thus, the reader is offered an excellent overview.

The original title of the book is in German:
Alles über Hautschutz, Hautreinigung, Hautpflege: Einsatz, Produktübersicht, Bezugsquellen
